August Intro To Homeschooling Series

These sessions are intended for families new to homeschooling. All sessions will be led by two experienced homeschoolers and will include a short presentation on the topic, followed by a Q&A where participants are welcome to ask specific questions about their situation. Given the current difficulties of meeting other homeschoolers due to the new coronavirus, sessions are intended to be an opportunity to meet other homeschooling families in the area.

To register for these free sessions, please email registrar@cvillechec.org. Include your name, the names of the sessions you wish to attend, and the ages of the children you are considering homeschooling this year. Additionally, you are welcome to include specific questions you would like to see addressed in sessions. Registration will be limited. If your schedule changes and you no longer plan to attend, please let us know so we can make the slot available to another participant.

The Basics – Aug. 9, 2pm
This session has answers to the first questions typically asked by new homeschoolers. We’ll talk about logistical concerns like how to write a notice of intent and planning ahead for your year end evaluation. We’ll also discuss some common styles of homeschooling, what a homeschool day might look like, and common mistakes to avoid.
A Year of Homeschooling – Aug. 10, 7pm
Are you planning to homeschool for a year and then return to the public system? Families pursuing this option will want to stick closely to the Virginia SOLs. Learn what resources are available for teaching with a smooth transition back to school in mind.
Homeschool Favorites - Aug. 11, 7pm
Learn what projects, field trips, apps, and learning materials are our favorites. This session will cover fun and educational activities in the area. We’ll talk about what activities have been most valuable, what our best memories are, which books we can’t bear to part with, and what services we’d happily pay for again. Gain inspiration from our best homeschooling moments.
Customizing Learning – Aug. 14, 7pm
One of the best things about homeschooling is how it allows for differentiated learning—you can teach what your child is ready to learn in the way they like to learn it. New homeschoolers often want to know which curriculum they should use, but a single one-stop curriculum doesn't account for differences in levels and interests of students and is rarely the best way to go. Create meaningful learning by teaching the skills your student needs through topics they are passionate about.
Homeschooling While Working – Aug. 15, 7pm
Homeschooling while working presents a host of challenges. This session discusses strategies that working parents can use to help juggle school work with work outside the home.
Focus Sessions – Aug 16
These sessions are primarily intended as an opportunity to meet with other homeschoolers who have children in the same age range as yours and will have a large social/discussion component. Facilitators will comment on learning goals for specific age ranges, common challenges, and popular learning tools.
