Sylvan Heights Bird Park

Description Sylvan Heights Bird Park is designed to give visitors an unforgettable up-close experience with over 2,000 waterfowl, parrots, toucans, flamingos, and other exotic birds from around the world. Open to the public since October 2006, the 18-acre facility features spacious, walk- through aviaries displaying birds from South America, North America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. The aviaries are surrounded by tranquil gardens and lush natural areas, which enhance the beauty of the birds on exhibit and immerse visitors in native North Carolina wildlife habitat.

Notes Given the substantial drive to get to this park, we will be planning other events in the area and they will be added to the field trip listings soon. We hope to add a geology field trip (May 23rd) at the state park and a tour at the Roanoke Rapids Canal Museum (May 24th).

The World of Birds
With about 10,000 different species inhabiting ecosystems across the globe, birds are one of the most diverse classes of animals on earth. Interact with interesting birds and study their anatomy to identify specific traits that differ from species to species. From beaks to feather patterns, investigate the advantages and obstacles of flight and other evolutionary characteristics of birds.
Notes: Actual program run time is 45 minutes (1:15-2). We all need to enter the park at the same time (12:00) before and after the program time. Accompanying siblings 2 and under are free and do not need to be registered, but we appreciate it if you mention them in your registration notes.

Feathered Friends
Discover the world of birds using a hands-on interactive approach. Examine a variety of feathers to determine their purpose and benefits. Explore how eggs vary in size, shape and texture as well as length of incubation. Meet some of Sylvan’s special feathered friends and consider similarities and differences between different types of birds.
