Monroe Park

Description The Gold Mining Camp Museum at Monroe Park, the official gold mining interpretive center for the Commonwealth of Virginia, is the only museum in Virginia solely dedicated to the history of gold and gold mining. The three museum buildings interpret structures found at a 1930's mine with exhibits, displays, and signage inside the buildings and on the grounds.

Elementary Gold Mining Museum Tour and Gem Panning
The Goldvein area is a unique section of Northern Virginia in that from the 1820s to the 1930s gold mining was widespread. Southern Fauquier County is the northern edge of the Eastern “Gold Belt” which runs along the eastern edge of the Appalachian Mountains down to Alabama, covering a total area of some 4000 square miles. Learn about the history of gold mining in Virginia and the east coast at the Gold Mining Camp Museum at Monroe Park. Learn the techniques of today's prospectors and try your hand at panning for the mother lode! Each student will receive one bag of gems for panning. After the museum tour and panning demonstration, plan to stay and play on the playground and enjoy your packed lunch in the park.
Notes: When you arrive, please sign in with your guide in the parking lot. Each family will be asked to sign the park's liability waiver.
